Cockroaches Living In Santa Monica

Several cockroach species live in Santa Monica. Identifying the species in your home is a good step in the right direction.

German Cockroaches

First and foremost, Santa Monica residents may have to deal with a German cockroach infestation at some point. Although German cockroaches aren’t the biggest species, they’ll create one of the biggest problems. They grow a little over half an inch and will create immense problems because they’re prolific breeders. A female German cockroach will reproduce regularly. They can create 5 egg capsules during her life with each case containing up to 40 eggs. When they enter homes, they’ll take shelter near common household appliances, including ovens and dishwashers.

American Cockroaches

American cockroaches are larger with some of these cockroaches growing up to two inches. Suffice to say, you won’t be able to ignore these massive cockroaches. These cockroaches can live a long time. It takes them a couple of years to mature. Once they reach maturity, they can stick around for another year. It takes American cockroaches a few months to fully infest a dwelling. However, they generally don’t infest dwelling unless there is a broken sewer pipe nearby. When you find American cockroaches on your property, you’ll need to look around for broken sewer pipes.

You may also encounter Brown-banded, Mediterranean spotted, or oriental cockroaches.

Pennsylvania Wood Cockroaches

The male and female cockroaches for this species look remarkably different. Males are much larger and have full wings. Females are smaller and have shorter wings. These cockroaches are native to the Eastern states, but they can make it to California from time to time. The good news is that Pennsylvania wood cockroaches usually aren’t pests. They prefer being outside near blocked gutters and woodpiles. They won’t reproduce inside of your home.

Spotted Mediterranean Cockroaches

Spotted Mediterranean cockroaches rarely grow over a third of an inch. These cockroaches are primarily found in Europe, but they’ve made their way to the United States. Since then, they’ve been spreading across the country rapidly. Spotted Mediterranean cockroaches may enter your home from the outside, but they likely won’t reproduce indoors. They are attracted to lights so they may approach your home.

Oriental Cockroaches

Oriental cockroaches are larger with some of them expanding over an inch. They’re black or dark brown. Males develop wings that cover three-quarters of their bodies, but female oriental cockroaches do not have wings. These cockroaches are a lot like American cockroaches because they share similar behaviors. Oriental cockroaches prefer infesting old buildings and sewers. They can handle cold weather exceptionally well so you may find them hanging out around your garbage cans.

Smokey Brown Cockroaches

Members of these species are reddish-brown and some reach an inch and a half in length. These species are common in the southern portion of the United States, but they can be found in some northern states too. You may encounter them because you live in or around Santa Monica.

Surinam Cockroaches

Surinam cockroaches are unique for several years. First and foremost, this species does not have any male cockroaches. They’re all female yet they manage to reproduce rapidly. These cockroaches are smaller than others since they rarely reach three-quarters of an inch. They prefer living in warmer areas so you may encounter them in Santa Monica. When found near homes, they’re generally going to take shelter in greenhouses.

Brown-Banded Cockroaches

These cockroaches grow up to half an inch in length. They look similar to German cockroaches. You may need to work with a professional to determine which species you’re dealing with. Just remember that these cockroaches do not have racing stripes on their heads. Although you may encounter them, they shouldn’t invade your home.

Why Cockroaches Invaded

Although it depends on the species, many cockroaches enter homes because they’re searching for food. If you don’t properly clean your home, you may encounter a cockroach infestation before you know it. Alternatively, the infestation could be a sign that you’re dealing with a busted sewer pipe.

Do Cockroaches Pose Health Risks To Children And Seniors?

Our most vulnerable people are children and senior citizens, which is why they need to be protected to the fullest extent when dealing with a cockroach infestation. Cockroaches have been associated with foodborne illness due to contaminated food. They have also been linked to exacerbation of asthma and COPD. For this reason, we require household members diagnosed with one or both conditions to remain out of the home for up to 24 hours following the pesticide treatment.

When the home is vacant before the treatment is initiated, the household members do not need to be concerned about potential chemical exposure.

Please feel free to inquire about our natural and organic pesticide formulas, both of which are chemical-free formulas.

You do not need any of the aforementioned qualities, you just need to contact our Santa Monica office to request our assistance. Our exterminators work extended hours to ensure the speediest pest control response.

If you believe your cockroach problem is an emergency situation, do not hesitate to inquire about our same-day and emergency pest control services.

Will My Pets Be Exposed To Harmful Ingredients Found In Cockroach Control Products?

No, mainly because we never initial a pest control treatment while home is occupied with pets and/or humans. We request the impacted home to be vacated several hours before and after each treatment. This is part of a safety initiative to keep our clients and their family members and pets 100 percent safe when utilizing pesticides and insecticides.

Please feel free to inquire about our organic and natural pest control formulas as well. Both of these pest control treatments do not utilize harmful chemicals, only ingredients that derive from organic or natural sources.

What Is The Best Cockroach Prevention Strategy?

We believe our professional pest management is the best option for cockroach prevention. Following a full-blown infestation, cockroach prevention is much more difficult. In fact, what pest control treatment would work before the initial cockroach infestation, would not work after. The main reason is that the home’s pest barrier is at its weakest point. To prevent a repeat cockroach infestation, it is crucial to repair your home’s vulnerable pest barrier. How is this possible? It is possible by utilizing a quality waterproof sealant – silicone or caulk.

Routine inspections are also necessary to fight against repeat cockroach infestations.
